1. The Story
Photography is an art of story telling without words. So, the first thing to do before taking a picture is asking yourself what kind of story do you want to tell. Is it about social issues or you just want to tell how beautiful this sky. It's all up to you.
2. Choose the Subject
To make people understand the story, you have to choose the right subject.
3. Fill the frame
Don't stand too far away from the subject. If you stand too far away then your primary subject will be distracted by unwanted details. Don't be afraid of chopping off the top of someones head or other details that are not really important.
TIPS! : The advantage of camera.
See the world from a viewfinder is like cutting the world to a small square. O.o?
I mean.. with a camera we can exclude something around the object and create different sense other than what we see from our eyes. For example, if we look at the photo of one lonely tree on a hill, can we assume that it is the only tree on that hill? Could the photographer have excluded other trees?
4. Rule of thirds
It's one of the most famous rule of composition. What is that?
Try to visualize the viewfinder as having a grid which divides the frame into three equal segments both vertically and horizontally. Nah, based on Rule of Thirds, good composition can be achieved by placing the subject on those lines and their intersection. Or in other words, don't place the subject of interest neither on the death center of the photo nor on the edge of the photo.
TIPS!
Rules created to be broken. Photographers sometimes break the rules to create an unique, informal, or different photo. We'll talk about this later.
